You can carry around a two-litre bottle, tick off your daily water intake and still find yourself feeling flat, cramping during training or struggling to recover.
That's because water doesn't work alone. Your body relies on electrolytes like sodium, potassium and magnesium to move water into your cells, regulate nerve function and allow your muscles to contract efficiently. Think of electrolytes as the delivery system. Without them, you're simply flushing water through your body rather than properly hydrating it.
If you've ever finished a workout covered in salt marks from dried sweat, you've lost more than just water - you've actually also lost the minerals that help your body perform.
Training Demands More Than We Think.
Every time you train, you're placing a demand on your body. Your heart works harder, your muscles require more oxygen, your core temperature rises and you're constantly losing fluid through sweat. Recovery doesn't begin with your post-workout meal - it starts during the session itself.
When hydration is lacking, everything becomes just a little less efficient. Strength can suffer, endurance drops off, concentration fades and recovery takes longer than it should.
It's easy to blame a poor night's sleep or a lack of motivation, when in reality your body might simply be under-hydrated and missing the minerals it needs to function properly.
Why I've Started Paying More Attention to Beetroot.
Over the last few months, one area I've become increasingly interested in is nitric oxide and the role it plays in performance and recovery. It's one of those things I'd heard about for years, but only recently started looking into more seriously.
Nitric oxide is a molecule your body naturally produces that helps relax and widen your blood vessels. In simple terms, that means better blood flow, more efficient oxygen delivery and improved transport of nutrients to working muscles. For anyone who trains regularly, that's a pretty important process.
One of the easiest ways to support nitric oxide production naturally is through dietary nitrates, which are found in foods like beetroot.
That's one of the reasons I've started incorporating more beetroot into my routine, particularly fermented beetroot kvass.
It fits perfectly with the way I approach health - using whole foods and simple habits that support performance without relying on quick fixes.


The Added Benefit of Fermentation.
What I also like about fermented beetroot is that it offers more than just nitrates. The fermentation process can improve the availability of certain nutrients while introducing beneficial bacteria that support gut health.
Gut health influences far more than digestion. It plays a role in immunity, inflammation and even how effectively we absorb nutrients from the food we eat. When you can support performance and overall health with the same habit, that's usually a good investment.
Fermented beetroot also has lower/reduced levels of oxalates… but we’ll leave that for another day.
Recovery Starts Long Before You Finish Training.
People often ask me what the best recovery tool is.
Is it an ice bath? A sauna? Mobility work? Breathwork? Sleep?
The truth is, they're all pieces of the puzzle.
Hydration is one of the foundations that quietly supports everything else. Your muscles contract more efficiently, your joints feel better, circulation improves and your body is in a much better position to recover from the work you've asked it to do. It's not the most exciting part of health and performance, but it's one of the most important.
Here are my easy at-home electrolyte mixes.
- Post Sauna Electrolyte Mix - 500ml coconut water, 100ml Clover Beetroot Tonic, Juice of ½ lime or 1 lemon works, big pinch of sea salt, teaspoon maple syrup or honey (optional)
- Training / Everyday Electrolyte Mix - 400ml cold water, 100ml Clover Beetroot Kvass, Juice of one lemon, big pinch of sea salt, few cucumber slices, fresh mint, teaspoon maple syrup or honey (optional)
